Meeting 08: MACsec, Hardening the Automotive Ethernet Security

The next meeting will be on 13.03.2018. The agenda is finally ready (see below) and I’m very excited about it. As always, we will discuss some of the Automotive Security topics in the news, give an update concerning ASRG and share topics in the group. Then we will have a special guest giving a presentation concerning Security Analysis.

AGENDA

Feature Presentation:
MACsec - Hardening the Automotive Ethernet Security

Every new feature added in the Automotive Electric/Electronic Architecture has a direct impact on how information is transmitted among ECUs. For this reason, new communication standards are being deployed to reduce the load of old technologies and provide a new path for future developments. This is the present case of Automotive Ethernet PHYs, a new automotive technology that offers faster transmission rates for in-vehicle communication networks and backward compatibility with the TCP/IP stack. Furthermore, due to the inheritance of security issues from the Ethernet standard, security protocols must be placed to address both the inherited and new possible vulnerabilities present in the Automotive Ethernet technologies.
In this talk, we will present and discuss the MACsec, a security protocol and IEEE standard for securing L2 frames in the Automotive Ethernet. In sequence, the requirements and modifications that are necessary for the implementation of the protocol as well the advantages and disadvantages. Finally, we will discuss the technical and financial impacts when applying this protocol.
